Happy Halloween!

It is time to glue your self to the TV and watch your favorite horror movies, all dressed up in to a zombie costume and eat candy. Or just go to the movies...

Subtitles Vs. Dubbing

As a film lover topic subtitles and dubbing is always interesting. If films are considered as art should they be changed with subtitles and dubbing? I found this more cultural question. People who watch lot of television and movies are influenced by  language. I come from a small country were we prefer subtitles, but what does that to do with our native language? If the translations are bad the richness of the language disapares. Who controlls the quality of subtitles and dubbing anyway?
I prefer subtitles. Reading  the text below and watching the movie is not a difficulty since i am used to it. Some people could find that annoyng. In Europe big county's like France and German dub their TV-programmes and the dubbing is done with very good quality. I still find it strainge to watch Asian movies were Asian people speak fluent German, it just does not seem right!

But what about children who are just developing their language skills? For a child it makes a huge difference to watch a movie in mother language or in a foreign language. It is important for children to know their own mother language first and how to communicate with it. It is a huge advantivce to have a excellent vocabularity  in you mother language to really understand and learn new languages.

I also prefer to read books with their original language but i can only dream of reading Russian classics in Russian! Sadly our language skills are limited. It is very rear to be able to read in more than four language and fully understand what it is said. Now days the world is only getting smaller and translating things is more and more important. We do not want that in multicultural exchainge there will be misunderstandings only because we have translated things wrong!! In today's business world English is the ruling language and in few years it will be maby Chinese. In economical aspect it would be cheaper if everybody would talk the same language. I found that horrible!

Finnish people watch average 3 hours of TV every day! The question between subtitles and dubbing should be taken very seriously and specially the quality of it!

Looper

Action movies with Bruce Willis are getting old but Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of the actors who's face has still not became boring. The film Looper tries really hard. The theme time travel is always interesting and would have so much potential... but Looper falls in to all kinds of time travel cliches.
People, waste your Monday evening with something else!
