Happy Halloween!

It is time to glue your self to the TV and watch your favorite horror movies, all dressed up in to a zombie costume and eat candy. Or just go to the movies...

Subtitles Vs. Dubbing

As a film lover topic subtitles and dubbing is always interesting. If films are considered as art should they be changed with subtitles and dubbing? I found this more cultural question. People who watch lot of television and movies are influenced by  language. I come from a small country were we prefer subtitles, but what does that to do with our native language? If the translations are bad the richness of the language disapares. Who controlls the quality of subtitles and dubbing anyway?
I prefer subtitles. Reading  the text below and watching the movie is not a difficulty since i am used to it. Some people could find that annoyng. In Europe big county's like France and German dub their TV-programmes and the dubbing is done with very good quality. I still find it strainge to watch Asian movies were Asian people speak fluent German, it just does not seem right!

But what about children who are just developing their language skills? For a child it makes a huge difference to watch a movie in mother language or in a foreign language. It is important for children to know their own mother language first and how to communicate with it. It is a huge advantivce to have a excellent vocabularity  in you mother language to really understand and learn new languages.

I also prefer to read books with their original language but i can only dream of reading Russian classics in Russian! Sadly our language skills are limited. It is very rear to be able to read in more than four language and fully understand what it is said. Now days the world is only getting smaller and translating things is more and more important. We do not want that in multicultural exchainge there will be misunderstandings only because we have translated things wrong!! In today's business world English is the ruling language and in few years it will be maby Chinese. In economical aspect it would be cheaper if everybody would talk the same language. I found that horrible!

Finnish people watch average 3 hours of TV every day! The question between subtitles and dubbing should be taken very seriously and specially the quality of it!

Looper

Action movies with Bruce Willis are getting old but Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of the actors who's face has still not became boring. The film Looper tries really hard. The theme time travel is always interesting and would have so much potential... but Looper falls in to all kinds of time travel cliches.
People, waste your Monday evening with something else!

Perfect moment

Sometimes you read a book, hear a song or watch a movie that just touches your soul. In that one special moment you can just forget yourself and melt away. In the world that is full of greed, hate and ugliness its very rare to really see the beauty that surrounds us. Beauty that forgives all. I found it on a baby's smile or how the summer rain softly touches my skin like little wet tickely kisses. Beauty surrounds us if we are only willing to see it.
Very few directors can capture this on the film. You see a blick of it in Jean-Pierre Jeunets Amelie. You hear it in the soundtrack of the Single Man. And the last film i saw that got even close to it was Moonrise Kingdom. Yes Wes Anderson is getting only better.

Woody Allen in Rome

Woody Allen-the director dinosaurs from another decade-is still keeping us happy by making movies. And what kind of movies? Hes last movies have been filmed in Europe, that brings some new angle on the background. But it is definitely NOT the Europe i live in..it is the fairytale Europe seen threw very American spectacles. Like Vicky Christina Barcelona and Midnight in Paris is To Rome With Love full of cliches. Don't let them bother you..cause Rome is wonderful city, if  you avoid filming the poverty, beggar's or the trash.
To Rome With Love is a little bit chaotic comedy with lot of juicy character's. The Americans that Woody Allen has pictured with very loving irony. Giancarlo(Fabio Armiliato)-a opera loving Italian who sings amazing in the shower and Leopoldo(Roberto Benigni)-as a suddenly famous person are the sugar of this melange. Add few more very famous actors, love, adventure and comedy and you end up with a sweet slightly corny movie that you ether love or hate.

Zombies!

Zombie movies are awesome! Specially if they are not too scary. Henry Selicks new stop motion animation Paranorman should shake up the boring film year!

Django Unchained

Quentin Tarantino´s new movie Django Unchained comes out in December! The cast is more than awesome: Christoph Waltz, Leonardo Di Caprio, Jamie Fox and of course Samuel L. Jackson!

Bond. James Bond

You can see the mirror of time when you watch all the James Bond movies. While Sean Connery could dress up in a light blue short-legged-jump-suit and look sexy or listen "underneath the mango tree"-song without any hint of self irony. The Camp-era sadly ended with Roger Moore in the 80´s while the shoulder pads grew bigger the violence got more rawer.
In the early 60´s James Bond was still smiling and making humorous or sexist comments all the time! Maby because the cars and the women where more beautiful and Bond had still sense of humor. I would like to tell Daniel Craig to loosen up, James Bond used to be international playboy and have fun too. And after all 007 is part of British intelligence service! Wheres the tea? Wheres the lovely British accent?
And most of all...i demand more CAMP!

Underneath the mango tree from the film Dr.No. Warning..its an earworm!

 Skyfall (2012-Daniel Craig)
 Quantum of Solace (2008-Daniel Craig)
 Casino Royale (2006-Daniel Craig)

 Tomorrow Newer Dies (1997-Pierce Brosnan)

James Bond Marathon

Film freaks love movie marathons. I wonder how i ever see day light when there is so many good films to see. I have seen all the Lord of the Ring movies on the row, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future...you name it, been there done that. I have long wanted to see all James Bond movies.
When i was a kid i used to love reading Ian Fleming´s James Bond novels. They were always so trashy! James Bond had alcohol problem and all the lady's loved him. For me one and only right James Bond is Sean Connery and that is because the Bond movies from the 60´s and 70´s have certain kind of nostalgia in them. And yes..they are more Ian Fleming.
 Today's Bond is Dr.No.

Trolljegeren

Scandinavian folklore is full of stories about Trolls. They are magical creatures who live in the forest or in the mountains. Sometimes they are bad and eat humans or sheep's. They move in the nights and are very difficult to found. Does Trolls really exist is a mystery. I would sure like to believe in them.

I went to see Norwegian "mokumentary" film Trollhunter (2010) in the Nordic film festival in Vienna. There is not lot of opportunities to see movies in original language in Vienna, specially is the language are not English or German. So i love to go to little festivals like this and support them!

Trollhunter is a dark and funny film about Norwegian College students who are making a documentary. They meet Trollhunter and follow him around. Not very original idea, this movie owes lot to Blair Witch Project. But who cares...there are gigantic trolls, beautiful Norwegian landscape and the Norwegian languages sounds like fairy talk!

Baz Luhrman, William Shakespeare and F.Scott Fitzgerald

As I'm waiting for Baz Luhrmans new film The Great Gatsby like a child waits for Christmas i killed some time with one of hes movies. Williams Shakespeare´s Romeo & Juliet from 1996! Yep, in the 90´s Leonardo DiCaprio was every girls wet dream but who would have known that he ends up to be one of the greatest actors of  his generation?
Baz Luhrmans style is wonderfully bizzar. Hes version of Romeo and Juliet is brilliant! Even when moving the story to a modern times is not unique at all. We all remember West Side Story. Baz Luhrman just left Shakespearean dialogue the way it was not even trying to make it modern, combining it with brilliant colors ass kicking soundtrack and action.
I'm not at all against rewriting and filming stories. I'm delighted of finding connections between Shakespeare's Hamlet and Disney's Lion King or Aldous Huxley's Brave new world and Matrix.

Well check out the trailer of The Great Gatsby:

Snow White

This year comes out two Snow White movies. Mirror Mirror with Julia Roberts and Lily Collins:

And Snow White and the Huntsman with Kristen Steward and Charlize Theron.

There is many ways to tell the story. Thats why i love storys. Storys are ment to be told differently! Some themes are agend. In storys there are always good guys and bad guys, love and hate.
Lets bite the apple and go to an adventure!

The story of Snow White is based on European folklore and it is best known as written by brothers Grimm.
My favourite Snow White version is not the famous Disney version from 1937, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but the German 7 Zwerge-Männer Allein im Wald. Nina Hagen plays the role of very evil Queen and Cosma Shiva Hagen is the sweetest Snow White.

Iron Sky

There is never enough Finnish movies in the world or at least partly Finnish. Lucky for me i ended up in a cinema yesterday and saw Iron Sky. Its directed by Timo Vuorensola who also directed the cult classic Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning.
Seems like Timo Vuorensola really loves Star Wars because Iron Sky owes lot to Star Wars. But who the hell cares? Theres Nazis in the moon! The dialogue is funny and this is just the movie to see on a late Sunday night after too much drinking. It didn't seem to bother me at all that i saw the movie dubbed in German sitting in a front row.

What did caught my eye was that the Nazis had Austrian flag on their arms and that they also had a same kind of logos than Volksbank!

Why Do Aliens Always Attack America?

When i saw a trailer of another movie where aliens come and try to destroy human kind i was bored. Independence Day, Mars Attacks, Signs, Predator, War of the Worlds, Battleship..the list goes on and on.  Why would aliens be interested about us at the first place? And why should i worry when i have no plans to go to America! Except E.T or Paul the extraterrestrial movie creatures are not sympathetic at all. How boring is that? I would like to see a movie where are bunch of cool aliens who would come to earth to teach us about universe, space travel and everything.

50/50

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of my favourite actors since i saw Hesher. In the spring he will be starring 50/50. Looking forward to it!

Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Judi Dench is a wonderful actress and will totally rock any role she is making. Who would not love her British accent? Here is a feel good movie for lazy Tuesday afternoon: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. And of course Bill Nighy is in it too!

Dark Shadows

"Are u stoned or something?" "They tried stoning me my dear, it did not work."

I just saw the trailer from Tim Burtons new movie Dark Shadows. It was hilarious! Check it out:

Some people may say that Johnny Depp in a strange character in a Tim Burton movie is so last season. I say bring it on!

Films & Food

Nothing is more distracting in the cinema than ringing mobile telephones.  People eating in the cinema is the second. Rustling sound of candy paper drives me crazy! When the lights go back on you can see what for a mess people leave behind. Lakes of cola, empty bottles, popcorn bags even used condoms.. I wonder does people leave trash on the floor at their own homes too?

Ultimate movie snack is of course: pop corn!

At home watching movies and eating goes hand in hand. Home made pizza gets you threw all kinds of movie marathons. When you are heart broken demolish some ice cream and cry your eyes out with soppy love movies. Make some delicious gazpacho and enjoy it with Pedro Almodóvar. One of my all time favourites Fear and Loathing in LasVegas is best to watch completely wasted.

To Infinity And Beyond!

There is something memorable about film quotes. The coolest ones you never forget!

"My momma always said that life is like a box of chocolates! you never know what you are going to get."
Forrest Gump was so right!

"I make him an offer he can't refuse."
Well who would say "no" to Don Vito Corleone?

"Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."
One of the most memorable ending scenes. From Casablanca.

"I see dead people."
Made shivers go down my back in the Sixth Sense.

"May the force be with you."
Well more classic you can not get..thanks to Star Wars!

The last but not least.. and this is in German actually better.
 "E.T nach hause telefonieren"
How the hell E.T who doesent talk can suddenly say such a complicated sentence.. Just hilarious!

So these are my favourite film quotes! I bet i make a list nro 2.

  Hasta la vista, baby!

Aki Kaurismäki

Aki Kaurismäki is more famous abroad than in Finland.
He started hes film career along with hes brother Mika with the movies Valehtelija(1981) and a documentery about finnish rock`n roll scene Saimaa ilmiö(1981)
It would have been easier to be a serious film maker in the moon than in mid 80s in Finland. To begin with for an average Finnish person good movies consist all the Uuno Turhapuro movies from Spede Pasanen and Tuntematon sotilas(1955) from Edvin Laine. So Finnish audience was very suspicious. "Is this supposed to be funny?" They asked after Calmari Union(1985).
Calmari Union-an epic story of 15 men all called Frank on an Odyssey journey from Kallio to Eira. Back-and-white movie with cast full of well known Finnish actors and musicians like Pirkka-Pekka Petelius, Matti Pellonpää, Pate Mustajärvi, Dave Lindholm, Martti Syrjä, Puntti Valtonern ja Kari Väänänen.
Then came Varjoja paratiisissa, Ariel ja Tulitikkutehtaan tyttö and the Finnish people where even more confused even when Aki Kaurismäki got Jussi-palkinto (Finnish movie award) from Varjoja paratiisissa and Tulitikkutehtaan tyttö.
Kaurismäki uses very unique dialogue. Often the most important things are said without any words. Tulitikkutehtaan tyttö has less words than in any other Kaurismäki movie. First words are said after ten minutes: "Small Beer."
Hes movies are said to be eccentric and melancholic but i don't think like that. I found Kaurismäki films beautiful and sometimes hilariously funny.
Mies Vailla Menneisyyttä(2002) (The Man Without The Past) was nominated for Academy Award for Best Foreign language film and won Grand Prix at Cannes. Now Finnish people had to admit too that Aki Kaurismäki is a serious screenwriter and movie director.

 Interesting Facts:
Aki kaurismäki boycott New York´s 40.th Film Festival because Abbas Kiarostami, Iranian movie director couldn't get visa to USA

My Top 5 Favourite Aki Kaurismäki films:

 Calmari Union(1985)
 Drifting Clouds(1996)
 Shadows in Paradise(1986)
 I Hired a Contract Killer(1990)
 The Match Factory Girl(1990)

A Single Man

Colin Firth was always the dude from the Bridged Jones movies for me. Until i just wandered one rainy evening in the cinema and saw A Single Man. I didn't even know what the film was about. So i sat there in the almost empty room in the darkness and suddenly i was amazed the beauty of the film. It is very rare to see real beauty in the movies. Specially the soundtrack by composer Abel Korzeniowski was wonderful. It should have won the Oscar!
A Single Man is first movie directed by Tom Ford. Yes, Tom Ford the fashion designer. So no wonder that the movie has such a beautiful costumes! The film is taking a place in the early 60´s so all us 60´s car fans can melt like butter.

Breakfast at Tiffanys

All time classic based on a novel by Truman Capote and directed by Blake Edwards. Starring fabulous Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly.
In the Capote´s novel Holly is pictured as a easy going prostitute but the movie version is much more cleaned up and has a Hollywood style happy ending.
Holly Golightly is really a country girl Lula Mae Barnes who got married by the age of 14. She runs away and ends up in New York. Holly pictures her self free spirit who does not want to be owned or own anything. Her home doesn't really have lot of furniture and even her cat doesn't have a name. Anybody she truly cares about is her brother Fred. Truman Capote had pictured Marilyn Monroe as Holly Golightly. But Audrey Hepburn really made the movie to spark.

 Movie trivia:

Henri Mancini composed the song "Moon River" to fit Hepburns vocal range and it won an Oscar.
Breakfast at Tiffany's made Holly Golightly a fashion icon with the famous black Givency dress.

supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

Mary Poppins is one of my childhood favourite Disney movie. Starring Julie Andrews as a magical Nanny who shakes up the Banks family and takes the kids to adventures. Mary Poppins is know-it-all character annoyed me as a kid but now I'm only fascinated about the "special effects" of the animated parts.
This film got bunch of Academy Awards nominations.  All songs are made by the Sherman brothers including classics like Chim Chim cher-ee:

And: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

The movie is based on the loved books by P.L Travers. Disney wanted to get the rights to make a movie already in 1938 but finally succeeded to get the rights almost thirty years later.

Mary Poppins is definitely a film to watch with children!

The Pink Panther

Peter Sellers made many funny movies but awkward Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther(1963) is my favourite. Its not coincidence that its directed by the same director Blake Edwards who made my other favourite movie: Breakfast at Tiffany's.

First of all The Pink Panther is a comedy. Peter Sellers as clumsy Inspector Clouseau is the funniest police in the film history.
Secondly it is pure 60s with swinging music composed by Henry Mancini and hip outfits. Yes in the 60s people still knew how to dress! Specially when the outfits for the princes Dahla (Claudia Cardinale) and Simone Clouseau (Capucine) was designed by Yves Saint-Laurent.

The rest of the Pink Panther films make less sense than the first one. They are more based on Inspector Clouseaus incompetence and clumsiness and of course his ridiculous French accent. What i always found strange that Blake Edwards made The Trail Of The Pink Panther after Peter Sellers died and the parts with Clouseau are out takes from previous Pink Panther films.

Sellers mastered many different accents and was no doubt a genius.

I warmly recommend to get the Pink Panther DVD Box!

Valentine´s Day

Valentines`s Day is a wonderful excuse to make romantic movie marathon. Specially if you don't have a sweetheart to watch movies with, stuff yourself with ice cream and chocolates and watch Pretty Woman with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. If you are not in a sugar coma after that, Dirty Dancing will do the trick. 80s classic with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey!

If you have a very chic lady friend best choice is to watch Amélie, the sweetest French film with Audrey Tautou. Best served with Macaroons and cafe latte.

For a total romantic fools best choice is Titanic. Get a box of wine if you can not watch it sober (i truly could not) and make out until your lips are numb.

But not all the people like romantic movies. For a backup plan i recommend Terminator 2 with six pack of beer!

Woody Allen: Vicky Christina Barcelona

Woody Allen is film lovers wet dream or worst nightmare. He started hes career somewhere in the early 50s. It would take very long time to see all hes work. Allen is a genius no doubt about that but he haven't been any personal favourite of mine. Until i stumbled over Vicky Christina Barcelona(2008) with Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz, Scarlet Johansson and Rebecca Hall.
It is a story about two American girls spending summer in Spain. The movie has a lovely soundtrack but what makes the film special is how Allen describes women. Penélope Cruz as obsessive, passioned and little bit crazy artist Maria Elena. Scarled Johansson as Christina who doesn't seem to have any passions, perfect example of person who easily tries new things out but abandons them after a while. These kind of people never can be happy cause they are searching something all the time. Rebecca Hall as Vicky seems to be reasonable and planing to get married and settle down. Three different women. Why do i see my self in all of them?
Just kill a bottle of cheap Spanish red wine and enjoy the summer in Barcelona with Vicky and Christina!

Oscars

Not many surprises at the nominees for the 84th Academy Award. I'm happy to see Jessica Chastain nominated for the best actress in a supporting role in "The Help" She was fabulous!
For the directing i keep my thumps up for Michel Hazanavicius. He is in a though crowd thou.. with Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, Terrence Malick and Alexander Payne.

Wes Anderson

There are film makers who make movies with the same recipe over and over again and then there are film makers like Wes Anderson who still can keep his fans interested.

Check out the trailer of hes new movie Moonrise Kingdom. With Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray and Tilda Swinton!

Wes Anderson´s films are known for very dry humor, awkward situations and often dislikeble characters like obnoxious Steve Zissou played by Bill Murray in The Life Aquatic. Although i loved the crazy family of Tenenbaum´s my favourite Wes Anderson movie is Fantastic Mr. Fox. It is a stop motion animation based on the novel by Roald Dahl. I often escape reality to the cinema. Wes Anderson´s movies helped me to crawl threw many gloomy days. When life kicks you on the head eat some chocolate and watch Fantastic Mr. Fox and you will feel better!

Filmography

Moonrise kingdom (2012)
Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
The Darjeeling Limited  (2007)
Hotel Chevalier (2007)
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
Rushmore (1998)
Bottle Rocket (1996)

Spaghetti Westerns

For me spaghetti westerns are "The Dollars Thrilogy" directed by Sergio Leone starring Clint Eastwood as the man with no name. A Fistfull of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good , the Bad and the Ugly. With Ennio Morricones film music the films are unforgettable.
Film trivia: Sergio Leone used extreme close-ups and techniscope which was considered as "the low budget format" but gave wide screen picture and worked beautifully with wide depth field scenes.

Best choice for a film marathon!

My Favourite Horror Movies

Ringu(1998) Directed by Hideo Nakata. Yes the Japanese original version! Specially i love the the scene with the horses on the boat. Just beautiful and scary at the same time. Much better than the American remake.

 M. Night Shyamalan have made lot of interesting movies including The Sixth Sense, Signs and The Happening but my favourite is The Village(2004). It is packed with good actors like Adrien Brody, Joaquin Phoenix, Sigourney Weaver and Bryce Dallas Howard. I specially love the use of color red which is the symbol of blood, passion and life.

Psycho(1960), Alfred Hitchcock´s masterpiece. Absolutely thrilling.

The Shining(1980), Jack Nicholson is going crazy in an isolated hotel. Based on novel by Stephen King and directed by Stanley Kubrick this classic will creep you out year after year and it never gets boring.

The most horrible horror movie i ever saw was Silent Hill(2006). Based on the video game this film just freaked me out. Pure nightmare thriller. Do not watch it with Kidd's!

3D

3D came and rocked the movies. Or not. I don't like 3D. Call me old fashioned! With the new technology it would be able to make amazing 3D effects but we get only fast made movies for fast made money. This year we get 3D remakes from Titanic and from Star Wars Episode 1. OK. I confess.. i could never watch Titanic whole. Never. So i don't think i will go and watch it in 3D ether. I hope that the gigantic 3D iceberg will sink that movie for good. In the future we will get loads of remakes and that smells like making money to me! Like whats wrong with 2 D? I'm missing the good old Disney style from the 60s and 70s.
So i think 3D could do much better. From the 3D films i saw so far were the animations and the stop motions the best. I have my hopes up for Tim Burtons Frankenweenie!

 Any favourite 3D movies?

Magical movies

There is only one word to  describe Hayao Miyazaki´s animation films: Magical.
Spirited Away is a good example. The story is kind of Japanese Alice in wonderland. The movie is filled with strange characters not only divided in good or bad and that's refreshing. kaleidoscope of colors and story with different subtexts make me wanna watch the movie over and over again. It never gets boring.
I wish that we could see more films from all around the world and not only American and European movies. Miyazaki´s movies are not only emphatic and touching but all so art on the screen. Digital animations haven't even came near of that kind of beauty that old fashioned hand drew picture's can provide.

My favourite Hayao Miyazaki´s films are: Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro, Howl´s Moving Castle and Kiki´s Delivery Service.

Film Music

Nothing brings the movie alive like film music. Good film music you can feel. It can make you scared or to cry and even to laugh. Normally film music stays in the back ground like in a basic action film but sometimes you are surprised by it. At least i was when i saw Tom Ford´s A Single Man. Abel Korzeniowski´s Music amazed me. Stillness of the Mind from A Single Man soundtrack:

Yann Tiersen´s music made the movie Amelie live. I listen the soundtrack very often because its just brilliant!

What about Paul Buckmasters 12 Monkeys Theme? Based on Suita Punta del Este from Astor piazzolla.

I love The God Father. I enjoyed the books and adored the films and film music from Nino Rota.

Movies from childhood have a special place in our hearts. Have you ever heard about Richard and Robert Sherman? Let me refresh your memory..

Sherman brothers composed music to The Aristocats, Mary Poppings, The Jungle Book and many others Disney movies. Everybody wants to be a cat!

Tim Burton

Tim Burton started his career in the early 80s at Disney company. He has kept his style and originality from Vincent till Alice in Wonderland. Even when he is little bit scary dark world is not so mainstream. Characters of hes films are often strange but emphatic and he fatefully casts same actors in his films like Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

Tim Burton´s Frankenweenie comes out this year! I have only seen the short film Frankenweenie from 1984. So I'm very excited how it will work as 3D.
I'm a huge fan of Tim Burtons magical world. First Tim Burton movie i saw was Edward Scissorhands with Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder. As a teen my favourite movies were Brain Dead, Star Wars and Terminator 2 so Tim Burtons fairytale like of films just fascinated me and they still do. I celebrated Steve Buscemis birthday last month by watching Big Fish. Because the best character in the film is the weird poet Norther Winslow. Just brilliant!

Best Day Is Monday

If you think that going to the cinema is expensive then you have been there in a wrong day! Normally you get cheaper tickets on the beginning of the week. Try Monday or Tuesday and avoid weekends and holidays. Best time to go to the cinema is in the afternoon if you don't enjoy of sitting in a full room. Lot of cinemas give discount to students and senior citizen!
Total filmjunkys like me don't hesitate to go to the cinema in every day of the week:)

Next Week

Two new movies to see in the next week.
I'm excited about the movie Cheyenne-This Must Be the Place. Sean Penn looks like Robert Smith! The trailer will tell you what it is about:

Who film lover wouldn't like French films? Next weeks choice is  Intouchables.

If you don't like trailers don't watch them! There are trailers that make you really want to see the movie and then there are trailers that just have all the cool jokes and action in few minutes and there is no content left to the film. That's just boring.
In the good old times the trailers used to look completely different than the modern ones. Check out this Pink Panther trailer from 1963! Its fifty years old so be gentle.

Hero or Villain?

Dividing characters in to good or bad is an ancient theme. Good guys are always pure, beautiful and heroes while bad guys are just evil. Same theme goes on and on in religion, mythologies, books, story's and  films. I find it very tiresome! World is not only black and white. It has many colors and shapes too. You can not divide people in to only good or bad. Thats not realistic at all. In the real world we have a choice. Choice to be good or to be bad and that makes life interesting!
Its so easy to dislike truly evil character like Lord Voldemort but theres nothing interesting about that. Hes just evil.
I prefer that the movie makes me wonder what is behind the characters.
For example in Sergio Leone´s masterpiece The Good The Bad And The Ugly the characters are not purely good or bad or even ugly. My personal favourite is the evil Angel Eyes played by Lee Van Cleef.

But who is then my all time favourite movie villain? Dr. Evil from Austin Powers!

My Cinema

For a film lover working in the cinema is the best. You get minimum wage but who cares when all you want to do with your time is to see movies. I work in a little cinema with only two rooms. We play mostly children movies, Hollywood movies and some German  and Austrian movies too. And yes they are all dubbed in German. We try to get English originals too! For me watching movies in German was first a horror but i have got used to it.
The building it self is very old. If I'm not completely wrong it was build in 1930s. So it has lot of charisma that new shiny 15 room cinema complex doesn't have. I just love the building! In the old books we found in the cinema was written that the cinema was closed because of the war. Those books were all most hundred years old! That's history!

We moved to digital time over a year ago. I still miss the old film projectors and the huge film rolls. But 3D needs new technology and the customers want the best.

Work itself in the cinema is not glamorous at all. Its lot of cleaning and making popcorn. But to see the people really enjoyng the time and loving the films make me happy.

Holiday movies

On my Christmas Holiday i went to see three movies in the cinema. Puss In Boots, Sherlock Holmes and Rubbeldiekatz. Sherlock Holmes was specially entertaining mostly because of Robert Downey Jr. I like Guy Ritchie´s Sherlock Holmes even when its more darker and full of action scenes than the original books from Arthur Conan Doyle.
Rubblediekatz a German movie from director Detlev Buck hitted the laughing nerve. The story is about an actor who pretends to be a woman with a bunch of funny German characters and a love story. Definitely a movie to see after few beers with your best friend. Sehr gut!

Yesterday i went out to see Carnage the new film from Roman Polanski. Not a romantic choice for a date night movie but truly interesting one. Originally a theater piece played in one room turned out to be a genious movie with Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, John C Reilly and wonderful Christoph Waltz!

Film year 2012

It seems like this year will be great film year at the cinema! Christopher Nolans third part of batman The Dark Knight Rises is something that i have been waiting for. And off course The Hobbit from Peter Jackson. And no, it will NOT be a splatter version. Joseph Gordon-Levitt fans will be happy to hear that hes in five different movies that come out this year! Including The Dark Night Rises and in Django Unchained from Quentin Tarantino! Awesome!
I was surprised to find out that Baz Luhrmann is working on The Great Gatsby. After Romeo and Juliet and fantastic Moulin Rouge. Australia was a horrible flop. The Great Gatsby will be in 3D and its starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan.

These are  my TOP 5 favourite movies to wait for: The Dark Night Rises
                                                                                  The Hobbit
                                                                                   Django Unchained
                                                                                  The Great Gatsby
                                                                                  Frankenweenie
